Green Marine
Green Marine is a voluntary environmental certification program encouraging maritime enterprises to adopt measurable concrete actions that go beyond regulatory obligations. The Halifax Port Authority has been a Green Marine participant since 2011.
The program tracks progress across ten categories including greenhouse gases and air pollutants, community impacts, and spill prevention and stormwater management.
2023 Halifax Port Authority Results
Results are compiled on a scale of 1 to 5; 1 illustrates the monitoring of regulations and 5 illustrates excellence and leadership. The program’s rigorous nature is reflected in the fact that only 18% of participants achieved an average equal to or higher than level 4. The Halifax Port Authority achieved an average of 4.3, a leadership ranking in the program.
How it Works
Green Marine receives support from the scientific community, government agencies, and environmental organizations, such as Net Zero Atlantic, Transport Canada, and Clean Nova Scotia.
To receive certification, participants benchmark their annual environmental performance through the program’s extensive self-evaluation guides, have their results verified by an accredited external verifier and agree to publication of their individual results.
The annual results are published in Green Marine’s Annual performance report, in early June of every year, and are posted on the Green Marine website which can be found here.
