Hot Works Permission

Hot-Work
Marine and landside hot work authorizations may be approved for up to a 72-hour period from the Halifax Port Authority. Therefore, any authorizations expiring over the weekend require a new authorization processed prior to 4:30pm on Friday if work is scheduled to span throughout the weekend. Requests requiring authorization outside of the above noted hours will be processed as an emergency request. Emergencies may include repair of items/equipment/systems that present an immediate impact to the vessel safety, stability, lifesaving equipment, other critical systems as determined by the Vessel Master. Processing these requests outside of business hours may result in additional charges.

Marine Based Hot-Work
Vessels and Agents shall submit hot work requests to [email protected] . Urgent and emergency requests should have specific details highlighted in the request.

Landside Hot Work
Landside hot work being performed on HPA administered lands, premises, and facilities should be submitted through their project Manager to [email protected]. Urgent and emergency requests should have specific details highlighted in the request.

Marine based and landside hot work shall not commence until the requesting party has received an email stating that the request has been approved.

Once approved, the requesting party shall ensure the work is performed by a qualified person(s) and shall comply with the following considerations:

1. Work must be performed in strict adherence with the latest edition of all applicable codes, standards, acts, and regulations, including but not limited to the following:
   1. a. Canada Labour Code;
   1. b. CAN/CSA – W117.2 – M87 Safety in Welding, Cutting and Allied Processes;
   1. c. Boiler and Pressure Equipment Regulations;
   1. d. Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations;
   1. e. Occupational Health and Safety Act;
   1. f. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System; and
   1. g. Port Authorities Operation Regulations

   2. Hot work permit is to be issued by the vessel (Agent/Owner/Captain) or Company and conditions thereof strictly enforced.

   3. First aid and firefighting equipment is to be available in work area, ready for immediate use.

   4. Fire watch is to be maintained.

No hot work is to take place while fueling or if flammable liquids, solids, or gases present or any adjacent works.

HPA reserves the right to perform on vessel hot work inspections at any time without notice.
