Reimagining and Reactivating the Halifax Seaport

June 18, 2020, Halifax, Nova Scotia – The historic Halifax Seaport is opening back up in new and exciting ways this summer. The current global situation is changing the way we do things, and with change comes opportunity.

“We have space, and that is a valuable commodity during this period of social and physical distancing,” said Capt. Allan Gray, President and CEO, Halifax Port Authority. “There is an opportunity to try new things this year that we haven’t been able to explore previously because of the demands on the property that come with a busy cruise industry. We are excited to have this chance to play with new ideas and work collectively as Port City Halifax to reimagine the Halifax Seaport.”

As part of phase 1, the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market building is starting to reopen to the public. Some prepared food vendors with permanent stalls and storefronts are open for pick-up only Wednesday through Sunday initially. To create a welcoming seaside setting for customers to enjoy their market meal and take in the Port of Halifax, the cruise seawall will begin opening to the public starting Friday, June 19.

Phase 2 will kick off on Saturday, June 27 with a reimagined Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market operating outside on Saturdays initially, starting with primary producers for pre-order pick-up only, with the potential to add additional Market days as required. Other ideas are in development, including family-friendly sidewalk chalk art, food truck pop-ups, and “Meet your Producer” events. Please check the Halifax Seaport  website for the very latest.
